Best Activities For You.

Filopappou Hill

The northern slopes of the pine trees of Philopapo Hill face the Acropolis-a scenic warning! – And on that side is a cell where Socrates is said to have been imprisoned. At the top of the hill is an ancient marble structure, the Philopappos Monument of the 2nd century AD, from which you can see the Saronic Gulf.

Apart from the attractions, Filopappou is the most significant green space in central Athens, on 173 hectares. Birdwatchers and dog walkers especially appreciate this place. At sunrise, the trees sing. At sunset, it's a virtual dog parade.

The entire park area, developed in the mid-20th century, features the beautiful landscaping of renowned modernist architect Dimitri Spikionis. The winding and eclectic cobblestone paths on the hills are all his work, and the rustic wooden courtyard of the Church of Agios di Mitrios Lumbaldiaris is in a traditional Japanese shape that perfectly blends with the thick-walled church. The design was inspired.

Lykavittos Hill

Lycabettus, another large hill in the center of Athens, is not as park-like as Philopappou, but the winding trails to the summit are a great place to reach. (Don't worry, the wolf named this hill is gone forever).

You will be rewarded with stunning views and up-close views of the beautiful whitewashed church, which you probably noticed from elsewhere in the city that shines like a fairy tale at night. And it wouldn't be a Greek hill without a cafe. If you need fresh air without trekking, take the short cable car from Kolonaki to the hillside.

National Garden and the Zappeion

Designed as a walled royal garden in the early 1800s, the National Garden is now a vast park for all of Athens. Tall palm trees and dark bushes are a rare shaded treat in summer, although the greens can be rough and dusty during the dry season.

Moreover, the location just south of Syntagma's parliament couldn't be more convenient. Approximately 100 acres have a large children's playground, cafes, and a muddy pond for turtles and ducks. (However, small zoos are not attractive).

Adjacent to the south of, Zappeion is a formal-maintained trail and green patch centered around the neoclassical Zappeion Hall. Today, it is a conference hall where Greece has officially joined the EU. Finally, another summer outdoor treat is at the southeastern tip of Zappeion. It's the Aegli Amphitheater.

Stavros Niarchos Park

The green space near the sea, which opened in 2015, has been radically added to the green expanse of Athens. It may be a bit far from the center (use the tram or Syntagma's free park shuttle), but it's worth it with a refreshing breeze and many exciting programs.

Check out the schedule for free yoga classes such as outdoor movie nights, indoor operas, and other events at the adjoining Stavros Nialkos Foundation Cultural Center.

Flisvos Park

Located in Farilo, a 35-minute tram ride from the syntagma, Frisbos Park on the waterfront becomes lively after dark when local families finish their seaside walks at the cafes and restaurants here. The attraction of summer is the shadow play at Theater Skion Tasou Consta. There is also an outdoor cinema.

Other outdoor experiences

Further north, behind Exarcheia, Streffi Hill is a place only locals visit. Not surprisingly, there is a cafe at the top. While in the neighborhood, drive through the small but locally managed Navalino Park, the essence of Exarcheia's self-organizing spirit.

Farther away, Mount Ymittos is the most essential mountain near Athens and is easily accessible by bus. Start your exploration at Moni Kaisarianis and depart from there.

Finally, in addition to the above, Athens is dotted with other cinemas. Often covered with vines, it is protected from the noise of big cities. All mini parks are the same, but the snack bar has cold beer and popcorn, and the screen has grip action.
